Authentify's Phone-Based Authentication Process Scores at 2011 RSA Conference
Introduced at the 2001 RSA Conference, 4 of 6 Finalists in the 2011 SC Readers Trust Awards MultiFactor Authentication Category Use the Authentify Process for Voice Channel Out-of-Band Authentication.
CHICAGO, San Francisco. February 10, 2011— As the curtain prepares to rise on the 2011 RSA Conference at San Francisco's Moscone Center, the Authentify team is commemorating the 10th anniversary of launching its phone-based authentication services at the 2001 RSA Conference. This year is particularly gratifying as using the telephone as a tool in authentication schemas has arrived in the security mainstream. 4 of the 6 finalists in SC Magazine's SC Readers Trust Award category for Best Multifactor Product include some form of Authentify's phone-based process in their offerings. Authentify themselves won the SC Award for Best Authentication Technology in 2006.
Portraying the telephone as an authentication tool was not easy at first, but Peter Tapling, President & CEO of Authentify is bullish on the prospects moving forward. "Using the telephone as an authentication factor was a different approach when we introduced Authentify's services in 2001. The most popular strong authenticationor 2-factor authentication techniques at the time included challenge response questions or physical tokens. Employing the user's phone as the 2nd factor was quite a twist."
In 2001, to help call attention to Authentify's use of the telephone, Authentify made the controversial move of employing infamous telephone network hacker, Kevin Mitnick for appearances in their exhibit area. "Kevin had only been released from prison the year before", said recalled Tapling. "His case had been high profile and some of the attendees were a little upset with us. Clearly all has been forgiven as he runs his own security consulting business now."
Over the years, Authentify has been recognized numerous times by publications, industry associations and analyst firms. Among the highlights a 2009 Frost & Sullivan Global Product Innovation Award, a 2009 Software and Information Industry CODiE Award for Best Identity Authentication Technology and Tapling's favorite, a 2004 Computerworld Case Study award for a phone-based authentication process deployed at Hewlett Packard. "We met the HP folks at our first RSA in 2001 and the application itself, still in use, represents an elegant way to activate smart cards."
