Authentify® Wins “Best Implementation of New Technology” for project at HP -- Case Study Competition held by Technology Executives Club
Unique process for automating authentication and remote access to Hewlett Packard’s Business Partner Extranet garners honors in annual emerging technology competition.
Chicago, IL - September 29, 2003 - The Technology Executives Club annual Emerging Technology Symposium features a Case Study Competition for Best Implementation of a New Technology. Honors for the 2003 competition were awarded to Authentify, Inc. for an automated authentication application designed using Authentify’s technology for the Hewlett Packard Company. The award is intended to call attention to innovative uses of new technologies. This year’s competition featured finalists from firms including RSA, Motorola and SPSS.
HP needed to find a way to expedite the enrollment and delivery of digital certificates required for access to their Business Partner Extranet. The existing process could take several weeks and delay a business partner’s ability to interact with HP online. An improvement would provide HP a tangible commercial advantage when dealing with global distributors.
“We needed a faster way to provide access to the extranet without compromising security,” said Alan Dundas, the project manager for Hewlett Packard. “An online solution made sense. We evaluated several alternatives but the Authentify solution stood out as the only way to make direct out-of-band contact with the actual user at the same time they were online.”
“Authentify places an automated outbound telephone call and synchronizes the call with a user’s Internet session, effectively ‘touching’ the individual behind the computer to provide an audit trail binding an individual to an Internet event”, explained Peter Tapling, President and CEO of Authentify. During the phone call, the user interacts with both audio and visual elements to insure the computer, the phone and the user are all “in the same place at the same time.” Specific to the HP application, an activation code for a digital certificate registration is delivered to the user over the phone. Hewlett Packard placed the application in production in July of 2002 and since then has used Authentify in the authentication process for business partners around the world.
Authentify, Inc. has employed its patent-pending phone and internet synchronization process to customers including VeriSign, Associated Bank, the U.S. Social Security Administration and the Department of Defense.
“We’ve won awards from the Giga Group and other industry associations in the past”, said Tapling, “but it’s nice to be recognized by your peers and technology users in the trenches for an in-production implementation that has delivered provable economic value.”
