Nuance Verifier Named “Product of the Year”

Innovative Voice Authentication Software Recognized by TMC BiometriTech for “Driving Momentum of the Biometric Industry”

Menlo Park, CA - Febuary 25, 2003 - Secure access to protected data is a major theme in today’s business climate, and technology industry watchers are recognizing the value of biometric solutions in addressing this critical corporate concern. Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN), the speech experts, today announced that the company’s biometric voice authentication product, Nuance Verifier 3.0, was named a 2002 “Product of the Year” by TMC Media’s BiometriTech™ Newsletter. The BiometriTech Product of the Year award honors innovative products and services that have made a positive contribution to the growth of biometric technologies.

“Nuance and Verifier 3.0 are driving the momentum of the biometric industry. We’re proud to recognize Nuance’s hard work and innovation with a ‘Product of the Year’ Award for 2002,” said Rich Tehrani, president of TMC and group editor-in-chief of BiometriTech.

A person’s voice creates a voiceprint, and like a fingerprint, no two are exactly alike. Nuance Verifier software captures a person’s voiceprint and stores it as an encrypted, mathematical algorithm that cannot be hacked, cracked or compromised. Nuance Verifier uses these voiceprints to deliver secure telephone access and personalization without the use of passwords or PINs. Because Nuance Verifier does not require specialized equipment, such as finger pads or retinal scanners, it offers a more convenient and cost effective means of adding new layers of security for remote interactions. Nuance Verifier can also be integrated with a comprehensive deployment of speech recognition software and scaled to accommodate thousands of users in many locations.

Today companies use Nuance Verifier software to enable secure identity verification as a gateway to password reset processes and as a means to access to sensitive information such as financial or HR/employee data. In government, the U.S. Social Security Administration is currently testing a custom voice verification solution developed by Nuance partner Authentify, Inc. using Nuance products. Of the more than 250 million W2 wage reports SSA received, approximately 100 million were received electronically from employers in 2001. In an effort to make the filing process quicker and more efficient, the SSA permits employers to authorize employees to file these reports electronically on the SSA Web site. Users of the online system record voiceprints which, when verified, permit the user to obtain a PIN and password faster than the current process allows. A PIN and password are required for online wage reporting.

“We are honored to have won TMC’s BiometriTech prestigious ‘product of the year’ award,” said Ron Croen, president, CEO and chairman, Nuance. “Many organizations—from financial services companies to insurance agencies—are embracing Nuance Verifier as a secure way to automate access to sensitive information.”
