Authentify Gets the Call From Hewlett Packard to Authenticate Digital Certificate Recipients.

Service from Authentify makes automated interactive web and telephone contact with individual users to ensure digital certificates have been placed in the correct hands.

CHICAGO, IL - August 19, 2002 - Authentify, Inc.™, a leading provider of outsourced Internet identity authentication solutions, and Hewlett-Packard (HP), a leading global provider of products, technologies, solutions and services to consumers and businesses, today announced that Authentify’s automated authentication solution has been integrated into the HP Business Partner Certificate Enrollment process.

Prior to being granted access to the HP Business Partner Extranet, business partners must install digital certificates for users authorized to access pricing or approve purchases of HP products online. HP needed to find a way to expedite the enrollment and delivery of digital certificates. The existing process could take several weeks and delay a business partner’s ability to place orders via the extranet.

Authentify solved this problem for HP by offering an interactive real-time solution that offered both a two-factor authentication mechanism, plus an out-of-band delivery mechanism for certificate activation codes.

“We needed a faster way to provide access to the extranet without compromising security,” said Alan Dundas, the project manager. “An online solution made sense. We evaluad several alternatives but the Authentify solution stood out as the only way to make direct contact with the actual user behind a computer in real time.”

Authentify places an outbound, automated telephone call, synchronized with an Internet session, effectively “touching” the individual behind the computer in real-time. During the phone call, Authentify generates a single use confirmation number and displays it on the computer screen. The individual will have to enter that number on the telephone keypad, as well as leave a voice recording. The process acts as a strong deterrent to fraudulent activity and provides a strong audit trail of the entire transaction. Much more than could be collected from an in-band Internet based transaction alone.

“HP was using digital certificates from Verisign and a surface mail procedure for issuing them.” Said Peter Tapling, CEO of Authentify. “We were able to interface to the existing certificate infrastructure, reduce the elapsed time to hours versus days or weeks and strengthen the overall process. Now, HP can be very confident they know who they are issuing certificates to, even in a broad and remote community.”

Authentify’s unique capabilities have been used for out-of-band PIN delivery, real-time transaction confirmation, and electronic signatures. The HP application is the latest example of the flexibility of its application platform and service.
