New Voice Biometric Solution in Authentify 4.0 Enables Firms to Offer Broader Spectrum of Online Services

Associated Bank signs on with Authentify as the first customer to use voice biometrics in Authentify 4.0.

CHICAGO, IL - October 4, 2003 - Authentify, Inc.™, a leading supplier of automated authentication services for digital identity management, today took the wraps off the new release of its flagship service – Authentify 4.0. The new version is targeted at businesses relying on the Internet as a key service delivery channel who must be sure about the identity of their online users. Authentify 4.0 offers the ability to automatically authenticate the identity of their users with multi-factor authentication techniques including voice biometrics.

“The real challenge with doing business on the Internet is that all the endpoints are computers. They are machines, not people,” according to Peter Tapling, Authentify’s CEO. “Authentify offers the only way to get behind a computer and make undeniable contact with the actual person involved in an Internet transaction. Employing voice biometrics as a part of the process can ensure that the same person is using an account each visit. This is especially important in deterring family fraud, a significant and growing form of identity theft.”

Voice authentication and biometrics offer major advantages over other types of authentication technologies in terms of usability, cost, ease of deployment and perhaps not the least important – user acceptance. People, through lifelong use of the telephone, are used to being recognized by their voices. Authentify commissioned 3rd party research firm, BetaSphere, to evaluate user reaction to the “intrusive” aspects of voice biometrics versus other techniques. Voice biometrics fared the most favorably, regarded by most as non-intrusive process.

Opportunities for the Authentify biometric enabled service are found wherever secure account activation, enrollment and transaction confirmation are needed. Financial institutions can protect their customer accounts while still making online access convenient. Processes, such as wire transfer confirmation and PIN delivery can be automated using the Authentify service. Healthcare organizations can use the system to ensure HIPAA compliance by allowing only authorized access to health records.

The service aspect of the Authentify business is particularly attractive. The initial cost of building a voice enabled application, or a biometric enabled application is often in the moderate to high six-figure range. They can also be expensive to own and maintain. Authentify offers businesses a way to provide real-time biometric authentication and interaction with their clients at a very reasonable entry point.

Authentify’s clients include firms such as Hewlett Packard, the Boeing Employee Credit Union, the U.S. Social Security Administration, Verisign, Digital Signature Trust and others.
